AI in Practice Adapted Student Texts

Adapted Student Texts

I used AI to remove access barriers while keeping students in the same core lesson: adapting a credible source to a more accessible reading level and generating multilingual versions that preserved the original document’s structure. The key design choice was correspondence — students could work with the same ideas, line numbers, and prompts as the rest of the class rather than being shifted to a separate task.

Context
Grade 7 Social Studies, 2025–2026

Claude, Gemini, NotebookLM
Languages
English, Spanish, Arabic, French, Vietnamese
My role
Classroom teacher; adapted texts for English Language Learners and students reading below grade level

ProcessTrial and error, driven by a real constraint: students needed different reading levels and languages, and I couldn’t adapt multiple versions of the same assignment every night.

AI-Assisted Reading-Level Revision to Lexile 650

An American Civil War Museum article was rewritten to Lexile 650 so students reading below grade level could engage with the same historical content.

Prompt: “Revise this text to Lexile 650.”

AI-Created Multilingual Version

A reusable prompt produced English, Spanish, Arabic, and French versions with matching paragraphs, line numbers, and response spaces so students could follow whole-class instruction in real time.

Prompt: “Open in Canvas and create a document. Please translate this assignment into Spanish, Arabic, and French. I want all three languages on the exact same document. Stack the translations paragraph-by-paragraph (English, then Spanish, then Arabic, then French). Please keep the formatting exact, including (for example) all line breaks, line numbers and my blank question spaces. Here is the text:”
